Day 1 - Wednesday

- press conference (Evan Rachel Wood, George Clooney, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti)

George Clooney's The Ides of March opened this year's Venice film festival. The polizia and paparazzi were out in full force as the celebrities arrived by boat to the red carpet.

An honest and cynical look at politics, this American tale could (and does) have taken place in virtually any other country today. Ryan Gosling stars as an ambitious campaign manager who loses his political moral virginity by sacrificing it to further his own career.

Clooney stars as a Democratic governor running for president in the Ohio primary. Gosling works for Philip Seymour Hoffman's character on the governor's campaign and their rival's campaign is headed by Giamatti.

Gosling breaks protocol by meeting with Giamatti and the slippery slope begins to play out, complicated by an impregnated intern and a blackmailing New York Times reporter.

A worthy film that just might earn a few award nominations this Oscar season.

And also a fairly realistic look into the American political machine in which at the top level, everything is dirty...
