Day 8 - Wednesday

Quando la notte

Another one of the five films in the Official Selection directed by a female.

An Italian tale set in the Alps, which brings together a man whose wife and children abandoned him and a married woman who has trouble caring for her infant son.

Not one of the better films in the competition but beautiful scenery nonetheless...

The Exchange

An Israeli film that, for me, was one of the worst films I have ever seen.

I do not understand how this film got made in the first place and for what audience it is intended to appeal to...

I don't even know how to describe this and so I won't.

Faust

Pretty close to a masterpiece.

This Goethe adaptation by Russian director Alexander Sokurov (in the original German) highlights Faust's journey of greed, lust, and power. Faust makes a deal with the devil to obtain certain earthly pleasures in return for giving up his soul...

This is a film to watch on multiple occasions as it is constantly moving, both visually and with the rapid fire dialogue and so many of the nuances may be missed on the first viewing. There is an astounding visual work of art.

Faust is not satisfied and always yearns for more. But there is a price to pay for this desire and he makes the ultimate trade-off.

Sokurov's adaptation is a successful attempt to capture and display what is between the lines of Goethe's play.

A strong reminder that our actions in life have consequences and that our time on earth is very short compared to the eternity of a soul...
